To Be or Not to Be: The E-Commerce Decision
|
|
By Kalyan Sennerikuppam and Karen Anderson
|
E-Commerce, to be or not to be? Alas, that is the question for many nonprofits.
More and more have begun to accept donations, take registrations, and sell products
through the Internet. However, you must carefully consider whether E-Commerce is
truly a viable tool for your agency, and you must not become overwhelmed by the
sheer number and variety of available online payment tools.
Before investing, specifically define what you hope to gain then validate your hopes
against available technologies. Just because "everyone" is taking credit card payments,
don't be tempted to immediately assume it is for you. Credit cards should allow
you to make money for your organization and/or better serve your clients.
Accepting donations online is more expensive than receiving a mailed check due to
transaction fees on each payment, plus other ongoing charges. If your organization
has a limited specific base of donors who are perfectly comfortable just writing
out a check, accepting credit cards may not be a good option.
However, if you target a wide audience with the goal of receiving a large quantity
of smaller donations, particularly if it is geared to the younger, tech-savvy audience,
online fundraising may be for you. Do not simply slap an online payment option onto
your current website as an answer to your dreams. Carefully plan your fundraising
strategy.
Partner with a stable, reputable vendor who best suits your needs and can offer
a variety of service packages. The most economical ways to credit card process include:
instant payment processing, Internet merchant accounts, telephone credit card processing,
and PC processing with Point-of Sale Software. Investigate and ask questions about
set up, transactional and ongoing fees, merchant accounts, and if there is 24/7
customer service. Select an SSL certified vendor with a solid procedure for site
security. See if you need a payment gateway to facilitate communication between
you and the banks. Less reputable vendors may require this, but not make the implications
clear. In other words, ask questions. Reputable companies will provide you with
a solid package, putting you on a path to E-Commerce success.
